Oceans Inc. on Alternative Summit at Rio Plus 20

Ocean campaigners have been disappointed by the lack of progress for the High Seas at Rio Plus 20. But although it is difficult to make changes made at the higher political level, there is hope found in grassroots levels upwards to policy makers. Says Charlotte Smith of Oceans Inc., “One of the biggest messages to come out of the summit is that public education and awareness is crucial to forcing policymakers to up their game in the future.”…

Ocean in Google Earth Makes a Splash in Rio

In an interview with Charlotte Smith of Oceans Inc., Dr. Sylvia Earle and Maria Montoreano of Mission Blue describe the exciting new features soon to be unveiled in the Ocean in Google Earth. In the next year, plans are in place to roll out Spanish, French and Portugese versions of the free download from Google Earth to bring this exciting tool to a greater worldwide audience.
Said Dr. Earle, “Fifty years in the future it will be too late to take action that we now can take to stabilize the planet in a way that is favorable for us.”  The Ocean in Google Earth can make a difference in how the world perceives the ocean, giving those who otherwise would not be able to explore the depths of the ocean first hand a chance to appreciate it’s beauty, fragility, and it’s crucial role in maintaining the health of our planet.…

Photo: Asha De Vos

This weekend at the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, valuable dialogues and in-depth negotiations continued in the lead up to the arrival of heads of state and other government leaders later this week. Attendees gathered to talk about the future of our oceans, coasts and Island States. A full schedule of the day’s events, is at this link.
The main outcome of Oceans Day at Rio+20 was the Rio Ocean Declaration, which attempted to address priority action items for oceans and coasts, both at the Rio+20 Conference and into the future. The Declaration will be submitted to approximately 130 world leaders attending the summit from Wednesday to Friday.
The day culminated in the first e-Awards to acknowledge those that have most affected social change and sustainable development in the 20 years since the first Earth Summit at Rio in 1992.…

World Ocean’s Day Live from the Smithsonian and Galápagos Islands

In celebration of World Oceans Day, people crowded into the Baird Auditorium at the Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC last Friday afternoon. Dr. Sylvia Earle Skyped from the podium with a team of Living Oceans scientists on their research vessel, Golden Shadow, anchored off of Darwin Island in the Galapagos.

Dr. Earle spoke with the research team about how coral reefs in the Galapagos cope with threats including temperature change, ocean acidification and bleaching events. Audience members learned about current studies looking at rare coral reefs and how some coral species in the Galapagos hold hope that corals have the resilience to cope with global climate change. Following the live skype call with the Galapagos, Dr.…

Dr. Earle advocates for Sargasso Sea conservation & Bermuda Blue Halo initiative

Dr. Earle spoke at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI) last Thursday  to emphasize the importance of Bermuda’s role in conserving the Sargasso Sea — what Dr. Earle has called “the golden rainforest of the ocean.”
The Sargasso Sea is an open-ocean ecosystem that supports a large and extraordinary whorl of golden-brown Sargassum seaweed that spirals within the North Atlantic sub-tropical gyre near Bermuda. Large mats of Sargassum float over an area comparable to the size of the United States and provide vital habitat, spawning and feeding grounds, and migration routes to numerous species – many of which are endangered, endemic, and/or commercially important (Sargasso Sea Alliance, 2012).

Dr. Earle’s talk at BUEI was hosted by the Bermuda Young President’s Organization, and coincided with ongoing efforts by the Pew Environment Group (who sponsored the evening lecture) and Bermuda’s Government to create a large “donut-shaped” marine reserve within Bermuda’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) to protect the Sargasso Sea and Bermuda’s other vital and threatened marine resources – a project called the “Bermuda Blue Halo initiative.”…

Day 7 – Good Bye to Conception

By Kip Evans

An early sunrise cast a warm hue over Conception Island this morning, setting the stage for what was to be our final day exploring the warm waters of the Bahamas.  With only hours remaining, we set off early to sneak-in a dive before our impending departure.  We rolled off the boats, kicking hard to avoid being swept away by the current. As we descended to 95 feet, we were greeted by a single Caribbean Reef Shark and a small school of goatfish.  Everyone was at ease this morning as we slowly drifted toward the edge of the wall.  Along the way we took images of sponges, sea fans and each other as we contemplated our last moments underwater together.  …

Hope for Comebacks in Conception Island National Park

By Mavis McRae and Kip Evans

Sirenuse headed back into open water on Friday night for the 10-hour journey north from Hawksbill Cay to Conception Island.  After a somewhat bouncy night, we awoke to sunshine and gin-clear blue water. The island is home to one of the newer marine protected areas in the region, Conception Island National Park. Covering over 25,000 acres, the park is an important sanctuary for migratory birds, nesting sea birds and green turtles.
As it became evident that the weather was going to hold, we loaded our equipment and boarded the tenders, excited to experience the Bahamian reefs in bright sunlight. The first dive took us to the wall, a stunning drop off with colorful corals, sponges and sea fans. …

Tropical Storm Beryl Hampers Expedition

Tenders in the Storm (c) Kip F. Evans/Mission Blue

By Mavis McRae and Kip Evans
After being out of the water yesterday, we were anxious to dip our flippers back into the beautiful blue water, but the weather had other plans for us.  As we examined the ships radar and local weather reports, all we could see for miles were bands of thunderstorms – bright red blotches moving ominously towards our position. Tropical Storm Beryl, which made landfall in Northern Florida and is now moving up the East Coast was forming up over us.
By mid-morning, lightning lit up the dark cloudy sky above us, as claps of thunder shook the boat.  It wasn’t long before someone called out that a waterspout was forming and the team did what came naturally – grabbed our cameras and prepared to get wet. …
