Biotherm & Mission Blue to Collaborate on Hope Spot Expedition in Balearic Islands

 
Since 2012, Biotherm Water Lovers has donated more than €700,000 toward furthering the protection of Mission Blue Hope Spots
Today Dr. Sylvia Earle and the Mission Blue Expedition Team join French luxury skincare company Biotherm in Mallorca, Spain to highlight their partnership and announce an upcoming joint expedition to the Balearic Islands Hope Spot. Since 2012, Biotherm Water Lovers has raised over 700,000 Euros from limited editions of its most popular skincare products and charity projects to further the protection of Mission Blue “Hope Spots”—special places that are critical to the health of the ocean—through ocean conservation projects. The newly announced Balearic Islands Hope Spot expedition will mark the first time Biotherm has directly supported Mission Blue to conduct a conservation initiative of its own.…

Today, President Obama will designate the first marine national monument in the Atlantic Ocean, protecting fragile
deep-sea ecosystems off the coast of New England as the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument. The new national monument – which encompasses pristine underwater mountains and canyons – will provide critical protections for important ecological resources and marine species, including deep-sea coral and endangered whales and sea turtles. 
President Obama will make this announcement in remarks today at the 3rd annual Our Ocean Conference in Washington D.C.…

National Parks Were America’s Best Idea. Let’s Bring Them Underwater

Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument is now the world’s largest marine protected area. We can do more.

One hundred years ago, President Woodrow Wilson and Congress created the National Park Service to conserve areas of natural, cultural and historic importance and leave them “unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations.”

Places like Yellowstone and Yosemite were already in federal protection, but in the next 100 years, America’s “best idea” would include 413 areas and more than 84 million acres of vast wilderness, scenic rivers, military battlefields, presidential homes and more. It was a radical idea to put large tracts of land into federal custody on the heels of the Industrial Age when almost nothing was untouched by development and our manifest destiny.…

Mission Aquarius Aquanauts Splash Up!

On July 20, the Mission Aquarius Aquanauts completed their decompression and ‘splashed up’ to the surface offshore of Key Largo, Florida.  Following a busy day of interviews and meetings with conservation minded members of the Florida legislature, the Aquanauts joined us for a memorable fundraiser at the Diving History Museum in Islamorada. Talks are ongoing to look into continued Federal funding for Aquarius, and the possibility of private funding is also a hope to save this, the last underwater laboratory in the world.…

Mission Aquarius: This Time the Mission is the Message

As Mission Aquarius, a celebration of 50 years under the sea, winds to a close, the Mission Blue team in Florida is filled with hope for the future of Aquarius. Dr. Sylvia Earle, her team of Aquanauts and everyone working to support and highlight the mission pulled together into a cohesive team that has made a clear statement to the world – Aquarius must be saved.

With One World One Ocean in the lead, a winning group of talented ocean media professionals converged on Key Largo, Florida this week to call attention to the imminent loss of funding for the world’s last remaining undersea laboratory. Utilizing IMAX film, live webcasts from both inside the habitat and from the seabed, social media and mainstream news networks, teams worked 24/7 to highlight both the past achievements of Aquarius, and it’s possibilities for the future.…

Mission Aquarius Training Underway in Key Largo

Training has begun for Dr. Sylvia Earle and her team of aquanauts in Key Largo, Florida in preparation for Mission Aquarius. On Sunday, July 16th, the team will undertake a saturation dive lasting until July 21st to the Aquarius Reef Base, sitting in 63′ of water in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. It’s the last remaining underwater laboratory in the world, and Mission Blue will be there both to celebrate 50 years of underwater exploration, and also to bring awareness to the looming funding cuts ahead. This may well be the last mission of Aquarius.

Since 1993, the Aquarius undersea lab has supported 114 missions, with over 550 peer-reviewed scientific publications produced, numerous educational programs and television pieces.…

Canadian Diver Broadcasts Mission Blue’s Message

For Canadian diver Mavis McRae, having the chance to join with Dr. Earle on May’s Bahamas Hope Spot Expedition was a dream come true. Fourteen years ago, McRae picked up ‘Sea Change: A Message of the Oceans’ in the University of Manitoba bookstore. The book changed her view about our ocean planet, and she determined that someday she would meet her hero, Dr. Earle in person.

McRae’s wish came true in May of this year when Mission Blue invited members of the public to join in a Bahamas Expedition to the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park.
Even before joining the expedition, McRae queried Mission Blue about how she might help to spread our message of throughout Canada. Engaging the services of a public relations consultant to create a campaign, she has just now finished a tour of Canada from Winnipeg to Calgary, including radio and television appearances, newspaper articles and visits to several schools.…

Sylvia Earle’s clear message: Act now to save our oceans

Speaking at a roundtable with world governments in the Rio+20 process, world renowned oceanographer Sylvia Earle urged world leaders to act now to save our oceans.

“I was here 20 years ago, we all hope to be here in 20 years. This is an historical occasion. Will we look back and lament on what we didn’t do?”

“For the first time we are empowered with knowledge we didn’t have 20,50 or 1000 years ago. This could be a true turning point, whether we act on that knowledge or neglect to take action. Technology and science make it clear our planet is not too big to fail. There are limits to our life support system.…

Ocean Dialogues – Taking a Moment for the Fish

Dr. Earle shared with us a moment from the Ocean Dialogues of June 19th in Rio.
“One panelist, concerned that fishing interests were under-represented, asked that anyone in the audience who made their living as a fisherman to stand up. No one did, and he made his point.  So I asked if all of the fish in the audience would please stand up.  We were determining their fate, after all, but I didn’t see them at the table. Only on the table. Later, the fish-man and I shook hands and agreed that we need to listen to both the fishermen and the fish.”
