Chilean seabass (Dissocstichus eleginoides), also known as the Patagonia toothfish, is a deep-water fish found in the Southern Ocean off of Chile, Argentina, South Africa and New Zealand south of 40 degrees latitude.

Like many red-listed fish, Chilean seabass are slow-growing fish. Living up to 50 years, research suggests that they can take up to twelve years to reach reproductive maturity. Feeding on invertebrates and fish, once fully-grown an individual can reach over 2m (6.5ft) in length and weight over 100 kg (220lbs).

The long life span and late sexual maturity of Chilean seabass make it a species that is highly vulnerable to overfishing. Recently, One World One Ocean released a short animated video with a message from an animated Chilean seabass named Gil. Watch the video below to learn a bit more about Gil and his Chilean seabass friends.
