We encourage you to dress in layers and comfortable shoes for outdoor terrain. Bring sunglasses and consider a hat as well. Children are welcome to attend at no additional cost. Unfortunately Hillside Gardens is not wheelchair accessible.
*Parking is prohibited at Hillside Gardens. Savory Thymes asks that all guests park at Mill Valley Middle School at 425 Sycamore Avenue in Mill Valley, CA 94941. There will be a complimentary shuttle running from the parking lot at the school to the venue (a 5 minute ride.) Shuttle service will start at 2:40 PM.

New book captures grace and intelligence of whales

Bryant Austin creates the world’s only high-resolution, life-size photographs of whales. A photographer and marine mammal conservationist, Austin is passionate about exploring and creating connections between humanity and whales – what he calls “the greatest minds in the water.”
Austin’s just-released book, Beautiful Whale, catalogs his quest to “recreate the transcendent sensation one experiences floating an arm’s length away from the eye of an inquisitive whale.” This 124 page, 12 x 15 inch coffee table book published by Abrams features exquisite life-size (or “whale-scale”) photos of whales’ eyes, numerous full-body photo mosaics reproduced as 1:6 scale fold-out pages, and a foreword from Dr. Sylvia Earle.
Austin first became inspired to create full-body images of whales at sea during a dive in 2004 when, floating motionless in the water, he felt a gentle tap on his shoulder from a 45-ton female humpback whale.…

Great Whales Still Face Grave Threats

The Great Whales need our help.  They face multiple threats today in many parts of the world: “scientific whaling,” ship strikes, habitat encroachment, decreasing food supplies, ocean acidification, etc.; it is up to us to take on these threats and do what we can to protect these magnificent, sentient beings.

The Great Whale Conservancy was created in 2010 to answer this call, and the first problem we are focusing on is the ship strike issue that plagues whales in oceans around the planet –where great whales and cargo ships, oil tankers, and cruise ships try to occupy the same place at the same time.  The whales have no choice: they need to follow their food and consumes tons of protein every day to survive. …
