Celebrating Pulmo Marine Park’s 18th Year!

A Mobula Ray jumps for joy celebrating not only World Oceans Week, but also the 18th Anniversary of her home, Cabo Pulmo Marine Park, located within Mission Blue’s Gulf of California Hope Spot. This jewel of the East Cape region of Baja California Sur stretches five miles from the northernmost tip, Pulmo Point to the southernmost tip, Los Frailes. Surrounded by undeveloped desert and a stunning mountain range, the pristine beaches of Cabo Pulmo Park give way to a shallow bay that cradles one of three living reefs in North America.
A shining example to the world of what marine protection can do, Cabo Pulmo remains under threat.  Development threats to Cabo Pulmo remain, so at Mission Blue, we’re keeping a close eye along with our local partners on the region. …

The Natural Numbers Behind the Sardine Fishery in the Gulf of California

How many fish are in the ocean? How much water does a wild river carry? How much oxygen does a forest produce? These are the kinds of questions posed by “Natural Numbers: The Value of the Planet in Minutes.” This new project is producing a series of short – three-minute – documentaries on a range of topics from fisheries to rivers, mining to marine reserves, in an attempt to explain the value of ecosystems to humans and the planet.
We use video, photography, and animation to illustrate, in a simple but visually attractive way, the value of our natural capital and the inadequate ways we use it. Simultaneously, Natural Numbers will use social media to help capture the attention of decision-makers, teachers, scientists, conservationists, and the public, in order to raise awareness of these important issues and encourage action in support of solutions.…

Photo of the Day: David and Goliath Revisited

"David and Goliath," Gold Winner at Our World Underwater 2013.  Another outstanding photograph of Jack Crevalles at Cabo Pulmo, Mexico.  Says photographer, Octavio Aburto, "I have been trying to portray the research and the work being done in Cabo Pulmo, where the “David and Goliath” photo was taken, in a way that is accessible to the public and in such a way that it can be easily shared. Through this photo and other photos I hope to tell the success story of marine protection in Cabo Pulmo where I conduct my scientific research."
