Mission Blue works to accelerate ocean protection by connecting science, community leadership, and global policy action. Through advocacy, strategic partnerships, and the Hope Spot® network, we help drive systemic change that safeguards marine biodiversity, strengthens ecosystem resilience, and supports coastal communities around the world.

From international negotiations to grassroots conservation efforts, we work to ensure the ocean has a strong voice where decisions are made—and that protection leads to measurable, lasting impact.

Science-Based Advocacy

We translate the latest ocean science into accessible narratives, campaigns, and policy solutions that inspire action and support stronger conservation outcomes.

International Leadership

As an accredited Civil Society Observer, we participate in multilateral negotiations and global conservation processes, ensuring ocean priorities remain central in decision-making spaces.

Community-Powered Conservation

Through the Hope Spot network, we support local Champions, Indigenous leaders, scientists, and communities working to protect the places they know and love.

Ambition Into Protection

We advocate for durable policies, effective marine protection, and accountable implementation—because commitments alone are not enough without measurable action.

At Least 30% Protection by 2030

By 2030, the global commitment is clear: protect at least 30% of the ocean and advance active restoration across another 30%—safeguarding what remains and recovering what has been lost.

Mission Blue works to ensure this goal is not achieved on paper alone. Through the Hope Spot network, we prioritise highly protected areas, strengthen effective management, and accelerate restoration, aligning science, community leadership, and global advocacy to deliver measurable, lasting outcomes for the ocean.

Mission Blue Policy Positions

The future of life on Earth depends on a healthy ocean. Yet marine ecosystems are under growing pressure from industrial extraction, climate disruption, pollution, and habitat loss at a scale never seen before. Below is where we stand on critical ocean issues.

Large-scale, commercial fishing operations have devastating impacts on ocean ecosystems in the water column and on the seafloor. Practices such as trawling and the use of massive nets can deplete fish populations and destroy essential habitats, including reefs and seafloors.

Mission Blue believes large-scale industrial fishing should be stopped due to its contribution to biodiversity loss and disruption of the ocean’s balance, threatening the health of the entire planet.

Mining the deep ocean floor for minerals could destroy sensitive, largely unexplored habitats, harm biodiversity, and create long-lasting environmental damage, including sediment plumes and potential release of stored carbon.

Mission Blue believes deep-seabed mining should be stopped. We must prioritise the health of the deep ocean over extraction, given the potentially catastrophic risks to ocean health and biodiversity.

The Southern Ocean is a critical regulator of Earth’s climate and a stronghold for wildlife found nowhere else on the planet. Industrial fishing in this fragile region, particularly for krill, disrupts food webs that sustain whales, seals, penguins, and countless other species, while weakening one of the ocean’s most important life-support systems.

Mission Blue believes industrial fishing in the Southern Ocean should be stopped, as the extraction of Antarctic wildlife threatens biodiversity, destabilises marine ecosystems, and undermines the health of the global ocean.

The ocean and climate are inseparable. Climate-driven changes are already reshaping marine ecosystems and human communities through warming seas, acidification, sea level rise, and disruption of ocean currents and food webs.

Mission Blue believes we should take every opportunity to combat climate change because ocean health is directly tied to planetary health, and protecting marine environments is essential to mitigating the worst impacts.
