Celebrating Pulmo Marine Park’s 18th Year!

A Mobula Ray jumps for joy celebrating not only World Oceans Week, but also the 18th Anniversary of her home, Cabo Pulmo Marine Park, located within Mission Blue’s Gulf of California Hope Spot. This jewel of the East Cape region of Baja California Sur stretches five miles from the northernmost tip, Pulmo Point to the southernmost tip, Los Frailes. Surrounded by undeveloped desert and a stunning mountain range, the pristine beaches of Cabo Pulmo Park give way to a shallow bay that cradles one of three living reefs in North America.
A shining example to the world of what marine protection can do, Cabo Pulmo remains under threat.  Development threats to Cabo Pulmo remain, so at Mission Blue, we’re keeping a close eye along with our local partners on the region. …

Photo of the Day ~ Tiger Shark

Alexander Mustard shared this beautiful image of a Tiger Shark, Galeocerdo cuvier swimming just under the surface in the Bahamas.
Large Tigers can grow to as much as 20 to 25 feet (6 to 7.5 meters) in length and weigh more than 1,900 pounds (900 kilograms).
They are heavily harvested for their fins, skin, and flesh, and their livers contain high levels of vitamin A, which is processed into vitamin oil. They have extremely low repopulation rates, and therefore may be highly susceptible to fishing pressure. They are listed as near threatened throughout their range.

Photo of the Day ~ Curious Hudson’s Bay Belugas

For many of us, the Arctic is just a far-away corner of the planet that we may never see. So why should we care about it?  “It isn’t just about polar bears,” says Dr. Sylvia Earle. “Although they are the Arctic’s biggest predator and cutest mascot, there is much more at stake in this rich and largely unexplored ecosystem than you’d think.” Our lives depend the stability of the Arctic – one reason that Dr. Earle has declared the Arctic region as a Mission Blue ‘Hope Spot.’
