From Ecuador’s Galápagos Islands to Costa Rica’s Cocos Island and beyond, the waters of the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean are teeming with some of the richest biodiversity found in the world – including SHARKS!

These large migratory species swim throughout the region to feed, breed and have their young and need protection from shark finning, fishing bycatch and other human threats. There are several MPAs throughout the Eastern Tropical Pacific, including Mission Blue Hope Spots like Malpelo Island, the Galápagos Islands, Cocos Island, and Cordillera de Coiba, however, the areas in between are within international waters, leaving the sharks and many other marine species vulnerable. Join us on August 25th to hear from our panel of Hope Spot Champions with MigraMar who are shark researchers and conservationists on the latest in shark research in the region and current developments to protect them.

Mission Blue has worked with these Hope Spots and their partners for years to continue to aid in data collection and public awareness of the importance of protecting these waters, not only for the sharks but for the sea turtles, thousands of fish species, sea birds, cetaceans and many more creatures, big and small – and humans, too!
