In celebration of World Ocean Day 2026, Mission Blue’s Senior Hope Spot Program Manager Shannon McIntyre Rake joined BFM 89.9 to explore one powerful question: how do we protect the ocean at the scale our planet urgently needs?

The answer begins with Hope Spots.

Covering more than 70% of Earth’s surface, the ocean shapes climate, sustains biodiversity, supports livelihoods, and connects every one of us. Yet rising temperatures, pollution, overfishing, and habitat loss are pushing marine ecosystems to their limits. Hope Spots offer a path forward: a growing, community-led network of places recognised as critical to the health of the ocean.

In the conversation, Shannon shares how Mission Blue works with local Champions, scientists, and partners to identify, elevate, and support these vital marine areas. From coral reefs and seamounts to coastal waters and deep-sea ecosystems, each Hope Spot carries a story of resilience, leadership, and possibility.

With 170 Hope Spots and counting, the message is clear: ocean protection is not only possible, it is already happening. On World Ocean Day and every day, we celebrate the communities turning hope into action—and invite everyone, everywhere, to help protect the blue heart of our planet.
