Community Action Helps California Salmon

While strolling near a stream in the winter of 1999, Todd Steiner came across a worrying site. Trapped in the shallow water, adult coho salmon were frantically trying to navigate a golf course’s dilapidated dam. “The fish kept slamming into the dam, then falling back down only to try and jump up again,” he said.
Shaken by the experience, Steiner worked with the National Marine Fisheries Service to get the fish moved over the barrier. And he didn’t stop there. Steiner also engaged the community in converting the broken down dam into a series of jump pools that allowed the fish to continue their upstream migration. From this project, a conservation organization called the Salmon Protection and Watershed Network—or SPAWN—was born.…

Ellen Degeneres on “The Dangers of Fishing Nets”

On Friday’s show, comedian Ellen Degeneres tackled the not-so-funny situation that industrialized fishing has created in the ocean. Speaking with Captain Dave Anderson, who recently helped to free a gray whale entangled in fishing nets off Dana Point, California, Ellen spoke directly about drift nets, by-catch, and how she chose to give up eating fish once she realized what it took to get fish onto her plate. Pointing out to her fans that an ocean with no fish in 50 years is not the future we want, she challenged them to take action to change the dangerous course we are on while there is still time.…

Leatherback Sea Turtles: New California Emblem?

Leatherback sea turtles connect cultures, seas and continents on their epic trans-ocean migrations. For 100 million years they have populated the world’s oceans. Societies around the planet revere them as symbols of good luck, prosperity and fecundity. Yet, these timeless and unique animals are in danger of extinction.
Now, a conservation organization called the Turtle Island Restoration Network hopes to make this iconic animal California’s official state marine reptile in a push to raise awareness about the leatherback’s plight.
“People protect what they love,” said Chris Pincetich, a marine biologist at Turtle Island’s Sea Turtle Restoration Project. He said he was surprised to find how few Californians know that leatherbacks occupy waters just off their coast. Elevating them to the status of state marine reptile will draw attention to their presence, Pincetich hopes, and raise interest in protecting them.…

My Secret Life as Plankton

Check out “My secret life as plankton” for a fish-eye look at the unseen life teeming within each drop of the ocean’s water. We spoke with producer and marine biologist Tierney Thys to get an inside perspective on creating the film.
What inspired you to make this video?
I’ve been in natural history filmmaking for many years and have a deep love and respect for the ocean. I also believe strongly in the power of film to raise awareness and educate. The idea for an ocean series for TED Ed was originally suggested to me by Chris Anderson, curator of TED. We brainstormed on possible topics and it grew out from there.
Where did you get the idea to cast a fish as the narrator?…

Dr. Earle’s Hope Spots are a targeted approach to ocean conservation – a scientifically sound way of bringing attention to crucial areas of our ocean planet. Faced with relentless pressure from overfishing, habitat destruction and pollution, the ocean is increasingly threatened on many fronts.…

Dr. Earle and others Weigh In to Urge Interior Secretary To Remove California Oyster Farm

By Kurt Repanshek
National Parks TravellerEdited by Deb Castellana

Some environmental heavyweights — E.O. Wilson, Jean-Michel Cousteau, Sylvia A. Earle, Thomas E. Lovejoy, and Tundi Agardy — have urged Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to see that an oyster farm is removed from Point Reyes National Seashore when its lease ends this fall.
Their letter, released Thursday by the National Park Service’s Washington office, comes as Point Reyes officials are crafting a final environmental impact statement examining the impacts of the Drakes Bay Oyster Co. on Drakes Estero.

“You are now in a position to protect the only marine wilderness area on the West Coast for the benefit of the public and generations to come,” reads a portion of the letter.…
