Commentary from the International Marine Conservation Congress (IMCC) in Victoria, British Columbia

The Sylvia Earle Alliance has helped send Dr. Phil McGillivary of the US Coast Guard Pacific Area and Brendan Tougher, an Environmental Management graduate student at the University of San Francisco, to participate in and comment on the 2nd International Marine Conservation Congress (IMCC2) in Victoria, British Columbia. The two ocean advocates will be immersed in meetings with managers, scientists, graduate students and native peoples who are passionate about the protection of the marine ecosystem. Over the course of the conference they will be sharing their experience with the SEAlliance community by interviewing ocean champions who are committed to improving the state of the marine ecosystem.

Sylvia Earle Sculpture at Google HQ

Google is showcasing some incredible sculptures of oceanographers, marine photographers and famous divers to commemorate the successful launch of the new Google Ocean. The art is in one of the main courtyards open for the public to visit. The courtyard is located at 1600 Amphitheater Way, Mountain View. 

Jacques Cousteau

The sculptures were carved by “Viktor,” who has captured all the individuals who  received the famous Legends of The Sea Award. The massive stone carvings were unveiled in August of 2009. 

Some of the people represented are Stan Waterman – underwater film photographer, Jacques Cousteau –  ocean environmentalist & educator,  and Dr. Sylvia Earle – National Geographic Explorer. There are also carvings of Ron and Valerie Taylor – shark experts and film makers and Zale Parry – an underwater photographer and actress.…

Jackson Browne: “If I Could Be Anywhere” — a song for Mission Blue

A year ago this week, Mission Blue Voyage set sail. This TED Prize-inspired trip brought together scientists, activists and funders around one of the biggest issues we face: how to stop the degradation of the ocean. Read Chris Anderson’s report on what was accomplished onboard Sylvia Earle, when making her TED Prize wish, asked us to use all means at our disposal to spread the word. Jackson Browne, onboard the National Geographic Endeavor, began writing this song. And he finished in time for TEDxGreatPacificGarnage Patch, a November conference that focused on plastic pollution in the oceans and on land (watch Van Jones’ talk from TEDxGPGP).

Ted Danson Talks Ocean Conservation

In pre-interviews for last April’s Heart of Green Awards, Ted Danson joked with the staff of The Daily Green that he wanted to call his upcoming book Danson on Water. Well, the book has just arrived, though the final title isOceana: Our Endangered Oceans and What We Can Do to Save Them.
Produced in association with the nonprofit advocacy group Oceana, the book is stunning, filled with spectacular color photos, wonderful illustrations, heartwarming vignettes and lots of celebrity and expert testimonies from the likes of Sylvia Earle, Robert Kennedy, Jr., Philippe Cousteau, Jr. and Spanish sea captains.…

Travel into the deep blue sea where only scientists and oceanographers go! In Disneynature’s Oceans, filmmakers take viewers inside the undersea world of the great white shark and the horse mackerel. Viewers witness the slow march of hundreds of thousands of crabs and get to swim alongside dozens of exotic creatures.
The movie, which was shot at more than 50 different locations, involved two years of planning and four years of filming. Oceanographer Sylvia Earle worked as an advisor on the movie. TFK chatted with Earle about the movie and her thoughts about Earth Day.

Sylvia Earle: Oceans at risk because of ‘luxury tastes’

Sylvia Earle spoke to Stephen Sackur at the Editorial Intelligence conference in Portmeirion, in North Wales.

“The world renowned American oceanographer, Sylvia Earle, is convinced that our seas, and therefore our planet, are in grave peril. But how can she convince the world to take notice of a global threat which is invisible to most of us?”

Kip Evans Featured in Bay Crossings

Kip Evans, Director of Expeditions for SEA will have his documentary “A Wave of Change” featured at the SF Ocean Film Festival, taking place March 9-13, 2011. In a short interview Kip shared his thoughts on our troubled ocean:

“The ocean is in serious trouble right now. If you consider that 50 percent of the world’s coral reefs are in trouble and that there are growing problems of ocean acidification, overfishing and many other issues, you will see that we need to act now—we are running out of time,” said Kip Evans, filmmaker for A Wave of Change, one of the films highlighted in the MPA-focused program. “As a filmmaker, I want to highlight the positive steps that are being taken, actions that precipitate significant change.…

Gstaad, Switzerland Event Raises $1 Million for the Oceans

Representatives from the world’s leading environment and marine conservation NGO’s met last weekend in Gstaad (Switzerland) to share programmes, ideas and initiatives for protecting the world’s oceans.

As part of an event co-hosted by the Bertarelli Foundation and the BLUE Marine Foundation, a group of marine biologists and international specialists evaluated the recent creation of the Marine Protected Area (MPA) in the Chagos Archipelago, the world’s largest marine reserve with an area of 500,000 square kilometers in the British Indian Ocean Territory.

The main theme of discussion between the experts was how to specifically manage the Chagos reserve, in particular how to get the most from this enormous no-fishing area for the Indian Ocean ecosystem. A number of questions were raised on how to make the Chagos MPA an international benchmark and case study to guide future actions towards the protection of the oceans, and how it could be replicated in the next few years to create other large Marine Protected Areas in some of the world’s most valuable marine ecosystems.…

Sylvia Receives Life Time Achievement Award

Our Changing Oceans, the 11th National Conference on Science, Policy and Environment, took place in Washington, DC from January 19-21, 2011. At the end of day two, Her Deepness, Dr. Sylvia A. Earle, was awarded the National Council for Science and the Environment Lifetime Achievement Award. After being befittingly introduced by ocean champion, Congressman Sam Farr, Dr. Earle took the stage wearing her signature light blue blazer and infectious smile to an enthusiastic standing ovation from the packed auditorium. Once on stage, Her Deepness cast her magic by opening with a seven-minute clip of the documentary/movie about her TED Wish and Mission Blue.…
